About this tool

Random Color at a glance

A random color at the push of a button — shown as a large swatch and with HEX, RGB and HSL codes ready to copy. Perfect for design inspiration, for getting out of a creative dead end, or simply for finding a nice random color.

HEX, RGB and HSL at a glance

One click generates a random color as a large swatch, together with its HEX code and RGB and HSL values. Every value copies on its own and drops straight into CSS, design tools or graphics software.

Random colors in practice

The color value is drawn from the entire color space — good for getting out of a creative dead end or finding a fresh starting point for a palette. How HEX, RGB and HSL relate to each other is explained in the MDN reference on CSS color values. For a coherent system, combine several random colors and refine them from there.

How to copy HEX, RGB and HSL correctly

Every color you generate appears as a large swatch and is also output in three formats. You see the HEX code, the RGB values and the HSL notation right next to each other. Using the individual copy fields you take exactly the format your program or project needs right now.

  • For websites and CSS you will usually reach for the HEX value or the RGB notation.
  • If you want to make a color lighter or more saturated on purpose, HSL is the one that helps.
  • Copy only the one field you need and paste it straight in.

Because the generator draws from the entire color space, you also run into shades that would never have crossed your mind. That randomness is exactly what makes the color an honest starting point for your own ideas.

Building a palette from one random color

A single generated color is rarely the finished result — it is the anchor for a whole set. When you like a shade, note down its HEX value and then draw more colors until a coherent group emerges. That way you build a palette step by step without committing from the very start.

Pay attention to how the randomly generated colors work together, because contrast and brightness decide the overall impression. If you use the HSL values, you can vary a shade you like on purpose and derive graded nuances from it. This method suits you when you are after fresh combinations and do not always want to reach for the same familiar tones. The generator supplies the variety that pure intuition often does not.
